Illustration Friday - PORTRAIT

This is my great grandmother, Lena Worrell, at her quilting table. She was incredibly skilled at fabric arts, and taught me how to crochet and do needlework. My mother claims that my attention to and patience for detail came from spending time with "Granny," who always encouraged my creativity.

Ebony pencil, colored pencils and Micron pens.

What an awesome grandma you had :-) I loved this illo and the story behind it. My granny was also a big influence on my life...
Thank you Amy for your kind comments on my kids bog. They have been doing creative stuff with me since they were born :-) and their dad is also an extremely creative person...I basically think that's why they've been able to develop their artistic talent way beyond their years :-) I just hope they never loose it.

This is beautiful. You are very lucky to have had such an influence! I love your use of colour, and the patterns in the illo and border.

Amy your talent abounds!!! It's as if you said "Hey Grandma" and she turned around to see what you want! I LOOOOOOOVE this Amy and when I was a young girl I would do quilting bees with Grandma's, and Ma's and other church ladies and I learned so much from all of them. This reminds me of that special time. That is a gift you have of reminding people of the past in your art! Yer so special...

Oh, this is terrifcic. The border is so intense and adds real richness to the black and white portrait, that is so rich already.

Amy - you always delight me with your choices and execution! This is such a beautiful portrait, and so very fascinating in its connection to aspects of your artistic style. I love the patchwork frame - it looks like stained glass to me (although I know it's squares from a quilt)... I also love how you've captured your grandmother turning around in the middle of her work....I feel like she's right there, quilting away! I learned so many things from both grandmothers - as the first grandchild, I had the good fortune of spending a great deal of time with both of them. I love the awareness I have of their influence on me...I feel like they live on in so many little ways.

This is just beautiful--the black and white photo realism really takes you back into that moment. And the color frame accentuates that movement, as well as clarifying its content with the quilt pattern.

Gorgeous.

What a great tribute to your great-grandma. Wonderful expression... seems to reveal the patience of the woman. It is so important for us to remember our heritage and the people who are its fabric. (Didn't intend that line to come out that way, what with the quilting subject, and all. The pun was NOT intended.)

Your illustration and quilted boarder tells a wonderful story. It reminds me of my grandmother who was secretly artistic, and encouraged me to draw when I was a child. Very sweet portrait : )
