Illustration Friday - SACRIFICE

I struggled with this week's theme, and finally found this quote by Elizabeth Cady Stanton. Stanton was a pioneer of women's rights in the United States, and worked with Susan B. Anthony to gain voting rights for women. They founded the National Woman Suffrage Association and Stanton served as president.

While Stanton is best known for her long contribution to the woman suffrage struggle, she was also active and effective in winning property rights for married women, equal guardianship of children, and liberalized divorce laws so that women could leave marriages that were often abusive of the wife, the children, and the economic health of the family.

Hear Hear.

In fact all of us would do well to occasionally remember those words.

I don't mean detract from the original meaning: taken in that context, it is a very poignant truth and often those in the middle of crisis really do need to keep hearing it so eventually they can internalize it.

Oh thank you Amy, that was one of the best pieces I've seen lately! I didn't know that quote before (had heard of Stanton, though). Sadly for us women, those words are even more important now than they were in her days. Thank you for sharing them with us!

Yeah! This one is great on every level, Amy. I love the empowering message of the words, and i love your treatment. The lettering and the hand with the wonderful butterflies and stars comes together in such a gorgeous piece of work! I really delight in seeing the 60's-70's influence in your art...it's a style that's dear to me, and you really bring new life to it:>

Beautiful!- style reminds me of the Paris Metropolitan -- Art Nouveau. Great quote- for a woman-- I'm kidding- it's just plain a great quote. And the more one develops oneself-- the less one need sacrifice in helping others develop. Lamaesque- help yourself first - so that you'll be better able to help others.

beautifully done! I've read a lot about the women's suffrage movement. We must remember what those brave women went through to gain such rights that we take for granted today.
Watch Iron Jawed Angels with Hilary Swank as suffragette Alice Paul. It's an amazing and inspiring story.

This is wonderful--the words and the illustration! Did you do all the lettering by hand? It's fabulous! I'd love to have a poster of it.
